The 1991 Tinui flood was a very significant event for the district. Prolonged rain during early April meant the land was extremely wet and not able to cope with the more than 20mm of rain per hour that occurred on 10 April 1991.
All parts of the Tinui and Whareama districts that bordered the Whareama and Tinui Rivers were affected, with considerable damage to property and livestock.
Here is the Wellington Regional Council (now Greater Wellington) report on the flood.
