John Groves - 05-39/P-J-6-1
John Groves was born in Freshwater, Isle of Wight in 1807 and came to Castlepoint with his wife and children on 13 July 1855. Initially he ran the Castlepoint Store for Thomas Guthrie before acquiring substantial land between the top of the Blairlogie Hill (Purinui), Bushgrove, Marangai, Bute, Awatea and Flag Creek stations.
He married Ann Peach in 1830 and their children were Henry, William, Catherine, Albert, Emily, Fanny, John, Ellen and Louisa. Ann died on 3 March 1861.
John became incapacitated in the 1890s and was forced to move to Masterton where a housekeeper - Frances Gray - kept house for him.
He died on 27 April 1892 at his residence in Church Street, Masterton, reportedly of gangrene.
Mother of Henry, William, Catherine, Albert, Emily, Fanny, John, Ellen and Louisa. Died on Mar 3 1861.
Another old settler of this district in the person of Mr John Groves, senior, passed away at his residence in Masterton this (Wednesday) morning. Mr Groves, who had reached the ripe old age of eighty-five years, came to the Colony from the Isle of Wight in June 1856. For the past twenty-five years he had been engaged sheep farming between Tenui and Castlepoint. Some year or two ago he became a cripple, which necessitated his coming to Masterton. The old gentleman was hale and hearty until a fortnight ago. The immediate cause of death was gangrene. The deceased leaves one son (Mr John Groves, of Tenui) three daughters (Mrs G. Speedy, of Wainui; Mrs McHutcheon, of Whakataki; and Mrs Belliss, of Tenui) about thirty-five grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
